Advancing Indonesia's Net Zero Emissions, Trakindo Tests the Performance of the Cat® 3516E Green Diesel Genset for the Data Center Industry
As a mitigating strategy to lessen the carbon impact in the data center business, Trakindo provides a performance test of the Green Diesel Genset Cat 3516E using renewable fuel HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and 40% Biodiesel (B40).
Due to the quick growth of technology, data centers are now essential to sustaining daily life in all industrial sectors, including without exception corporate operations. Understanding the importance of optimal generator performance while still being environmentally friendly in supporting performance data center, encourage PT Trakindo Utama (Trakindo), as te Cat® machine solutions provider in Indonesia is presenting a performance test to prove the capabilities of the Cat 3516E Green Diesel Genset using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and 40% Biodiesel (B40) with the theme “Data Center Powered by CAT Green Diesel Genset; Accelerating Indonesia Net Zero Emission” on May 10th, 2023, at Trakindo Yard, Jakarta.
Mr. Ir. Edi Wibowo, M.T., Director of Bioenergy, Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), who was in being present, expressed his sincere appreciation and encouragement for the use of HVO and B40 in the generator performance testing. In his opening remarks, he stated, "Through this event, we also aim to urge community engagement and contribution to support the use of renewable energy towards Indonesia's net zero emissions in 2060, as well as an ebt mix of 23% in 2025.
In addition, appreciation and support were also given by the Director of Air Pollution Control, Ministry of Environment, Ms. Luckmi Purwandari, ST., M.Sc., who also attended and delivered the opening speech. and gave her opening statement. “Trakindo's performance test activity is a both beneficial and significant progress since it can be used as a networking opportunity to ask the community of generator users to help reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing more environmentally friendly generators. I'm hoping that this performance test activity goes well and yields the desired outcomes.”
Erwin Muljosantoso, General Manager of Power System Trakindo, stated that the presence of this event gave a chance for demonstrating the Cat 3516E generator unit's potential by utilizing renewable fuels. The series of trials will include two stages, through steady state performance and transient performance, which will be carried out three times with tests using different fuels, Full HVO, Full B40 and also a 50% mixture of HVO and B40. "from the Cat 3516E's performance trials it can be concluded that the Cat 3516E is able to operate using B40 fuel, which is in compliance with the provisions for the use of biodiesel in Indonesia, without compromising generator performance," Erwin explained.
Cat 3516E/3000 kVA is a type of generator back up popular in the data center industry around the world, including Indonesia. Caterpillar generator units have the ability to withstand sudden loads (block load) of 100% of the nominal generator capacity even if it uses HVO fuel and or even uses B40. "The content of NOx and CO in exhaust emissions from the Caterpillar model 3516E generator that uses HVO or B40 fuel is still below the threshold required by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia," Erwin added.
The data center is a place to put the device server's gigantic data storage that requires stable electricity 24/7.For that, of course, a qualified power supply system and generator set unit (genset) are needed, so that the supply of electrical energy is uninterrupted, has fast downtime handling and ultimately does not disrupt customer’s business operations. Quoting data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), it is noted that electricity consumption data center globally in 2021 it will reach 220-320 TWh (Terawatt-hour), or around 0.9-1.3% of world electricity demand.
The generator is the support system that can be relied upon to support adata center performance. The use of generators that can operate using low-carbon fuels can be a solution to be applied to support the implementation of the Green Data Center. Moreover, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a renewable green diesel or D100 type of diesel fuel which is included in the low fuel category which has great potential to be utilized by the data center industry and can accelerate Net Zero Emissions in Indonesia.
It requires commitment from various related parties to encourage broader long-term sustainability initiatives, in order to accelerate the realization of the Green Data Center concept which is sustainable and more environmentally friendly. "Through this event, Trakindo hopes could show that the performance of the Cat 3516E units using HVO and or B40 still meets quality standards back up power in the data center industry, so that awareness of the environment in Indonesia is increasing, especially in mitigating climate change actions and encouraging the acceleration of Indonesia's Net Zero Emissions," said Erwin.
